The Underground Fire un-official Ventures internet fanclub sprung up in
Jan 1997. Over the last ten years, it has been a valuable resource for
Ventures info as well as personal comradery and occasional debauchery
(see character above). The list has survived three or four hosting
moves but continues to thrive. Over the years, several compilations
of instrumental disturbances created by UF members in tribute to
The Ventures have been distributed (wasn't the first on 8-track?, maybe
not). Here is the latest such tribute to the Ventures and to the 10
Year Anniversary of Underground Fire. -Marty Tippens, Underground Fire
Operating Officiator

1. NoTrespassing
(live 1964) - The Jesters
Mark Place - Rhythm Guitar
Duanne Leinninger - Lead Guitar
Dave Groth - Bass
Jim Lamb - Drums
Here's two tunes from the Ventures (I know Windy & Warm is not an
original) No Trespassing and Windy & Warm, played by The Jesters,
the band I was in way back in 1964 (high school). Lead guitar by
Duane Leinninger, rhythm guitar by yours truly, bass by Dave Groth, and
drums - Jim Lamb. We were playing at a high school sock hop;
a family friend was recording us on a reel-to-reel, with one mike set
on the front of the stage, right in the middle. I think we
played No Trespassing at 78 rpm, after listening to it again ;-)) - MP
2. Apache
- Kanad Ghose
Kanad Ghose - Lead Guitar
Karaoke Background
I have used a Mosrite 66 Ventures model
with Gibson Vintage reissue strings on this one, through a custom
preamp and a Pod, with mid control set flat. I dont have a
tactile mixer, so the level settings on mixing are fixed
throughout. This and all tracks were recorded on a PC using the
Adobe Audition 1.5 multitracking software.
3. Discovery
- Michel Perillard
Michel Perillard - all instruments and drum machine programming.
As you can guess by the title, my intention for this track was to
create musical sounds when Discovery spaceship
enter into the space and travel throught meteorites. Since
this track which I have originally composed on
August 29th ,1986, I had to go back in time in my mind to
recreate the context of me, playing with The Ventures in a
spaceship, in their mid-sixties. . - MP
4. Diamond
Head - The Fender Benders
Ken Arnold - Rhythm Guitar
Ian Finlay - Percussion
Bob Leo - Lead Guitar
Jim Rosica - Synthesizer and production
Ian
is from Scotland. Bob, Jim and myself are from Hicksville, LI, NY.
5. Moon
Over Manakoora - Ron Simpson
Ron Simpson - all instruments.
My father was a big fan of Hawaiian music. He played guitar and steel
guitar. I've often thought it was ironic that my first Ventures album
purchase contained "Hawaiian War Chant" and "Moon Of Manakoora". In
1991 I learned of two clubs devoted to the genre, and have been
involved in that ever since. I have to think I've come full circle, or
maybe just going around in circles.
6. Fear
- Russ Wood
Russ Wood - all instruments
7. Shindig
(live 2006) - The Fabulous Planktones
Bill McGlynn - Lead Guitar
Marty Tippens - Rhythm Guitar
Doug Forbes - Original '60's Vox Phantom Bass
Adrien Anthony - Drums
Shindig and Fugitive were performed live last summer at the Huntington
Beach Pier. After nailing the lead to this Shadows favorite, Bill goes
into a Johnny Atlas type pose to which you'll hear me complain! Bill
and I both played through Fender Custom Vibrolux amplifiers. He played
a Strat which sounds nice and clean. I played a Wilson Bros VM 110
which was also played without distortion but overdrives a bit due to
higher output pick-ups. -MT
8. Fugitive
(live 2006) - The Fabulous Planktones
Marty Tippens - Lead Guitar
Bill McGlynn - Rhythm Guitar
Doug Forbes - Original '60's Vox Phantom Bass
Adrien Anthony - Drums
I played the Wilson Bros VM110 on this as well. The bit of effect in
the middle sections is from a Boss rendition of the Univibe.
9. Gully-Ver
- The Fender Benders
Ken Arnold - Rhythm Guitar
Ian Finlay - Percussion
Bob Leo - Lead Guitar
Jim Rosica - Synthesizer and production
10. El
Cumbanchero - Ron Simpson
Ron Simpson - all instruments.
11. Fourth
Dimension - Russ Wood
Russ Wood - all instruments
12.. White
Rabbit (demo) - The Fabulous Planktones
Marty Tippens - drums and bass guitar
Jon Green - Lead guitar
This was one idea to be used on a 3rd Planktone album. It was recorded
circa 2004. Jon and I thought it sounded very like a tune that coulda
been on the Ventures "GO" album.
13. Needles
And Pins - Kanad Ghose
Kanad Ghose - Lead Guitar
Karaoke Background
Mosrite 66, older strings, through tube distortion on the Pod.
One of my favorite tunes.
14.
Skylab
- Kanad Ghose
Kanad Ghose - Lead Guitar
Karaoke Background
This is a '71 Tele deluxe, going through the "rotary" effect on the
Pod. This is unedited Take 2. Take 1 was like the Ventures
live version, so for Take 2, I tried to play it a little differently
after the scale change to C# and even threw in a spur-of-the-momemnt
improv 1:53 mins into the tune. Hope you all like it. This
is unedited Take 2, flat, static mixer settings.
15. Gemini
Russ Wood
Russ Wood - all instruments
16. Mexico
- Russ Wood
Russ Wood - all instruments
17. Windy&Warm
(live 1964) - The Jesters
Mark Place - Rhythm Guitar
Duanne Leinninger - Lead Guitar
Dave Groth - Bass
Jim Lamb - Drums
18. Secret
Agent Man - Kanad Ghose
Kanad Ghose - Lead Guitar
Karaoke Background
Again on a Mosrite 66, same settings as Apache, unedited take 1, flat,
static mixing.
19. Also

Del Halterman - Rhythm Guitar
Dave - Bass
Marty Tippens - Drums

Downtown, Hurricane, The In Crowd were recorded on the evening of
December 18th, 1965.
I turned 21 on the night of this gig!
Bob Irish's introduction of The In Crowd is a tribute to his memory.
He passed away a while back, and he was a great rhythm player.
22. Hurricane
